Metsä Group biotechnology factory - quality is a key factor
The world's first next-generation bioproduct mill

Metsä Group's bioproduct mill in Äänekoski was inaugurated on October 18, 2017. Lapp Automaatio Oy supplied EPIC® SENSORS temperature sensors, protective covers and PR Electronics temperature transmitters. Pre-configured transmitters, EPIC® SENSORS temperature sensors and protective pockets were delivered from Lapp Automaatio’s Hyvinkää production facility. The bioproduct mill’s equipment represents the best technology and the site-based professionals, the industry’s very best know-how.

- Lapp Automaatio's delivery included temperature measurement of the recovery boiler, drying line, melting furnace, fiber line, wood treatment, evaporation and causticization. The choice was influenced by Lapp Automaatio’s previous deliveries to similar plants and its flexible delivery times. Also, Lapp Automaatio's temperature sensor manufacturing has the ISO 9001: 2015 quality certifications for ATEX and IECEX production, says Seppo Ojanen, Key Account Manager at Lapp Automaatio.

The bioproduct mill is the biggest investment in Finland’s history of the forest industry, EUR 1.2 billion. The construction of the mill started in April 2015 and it was launched in August 2017. The plant's pulp production capacity is 1.3 million tons per year. Its employment effect is over 2,500 jobs through the whole value chain in Finland and 1,500 new jobs were created.

It is the world's first next-generation bioproduct mill. Besides high quality pulp, it produces a variety of organic products including tall oil, turpentine, lignin products, bioelectricity and wood fuel. Potential new spin-off products include product gas, sulfuric acid, textile fibers, bio-composites, fertilizers and biogas. From the beginning, the plant was designed to form an ecosystem of bio-economy companies which produce a wide and diverse range of products.
